ORP and pH: measurements for water quality.
Understanding of Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP)
Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) is a measure of the cleanliness of the water and its ability to break down contaminants. The ORP value, much like pH, is important for determining water quality and for water treatment processes. It is measured in volts (V), or millivolts (mV).
The ORP measures the capacity of a solution to either release or accept electrons from chemical reactions. Just as pH determines the water’s relative state in receiving or gaining protons, ORP indicates the water’s relative state to receive or gain electrons.
Therefore reduction means a receiving or gaining of electrons (decrease in its oxidation state), such as when an antioxidant donates an electron to a free radical. The free radical is reduced and the antioxidant is oxidized. The antioxidant is said to be the “reducing agent”; it reduced the free radical. Where as the free radical is called the “oxidizing agent”; it oxidized the antioxidant.
The positive (+) ORP means high oxidation, the minus (-) means high reducing power, in other words, the water of higher (+) ORP will oxidize our body.
Many commercial beverages, normal tap water, bottled water, rain water, and so forth, have a positive ORP generally between 200-400 mV, and even as high as 500-600 mV depending on location. Drinking water with a positive (+) ORP is reduced to a reductive ORP at the expense of consuming the electrical energy from cell membranes. It can be harmful for body and lead in developing different diseases.
The oral fluid of a healthy human and mother’s milk both have negative ORP -70 mV, as does freshly made fruit and vegetable juice such as carrot juice with an ORP of -50 mV. Therefore, with a healthy viewpoint in mind, it would make sense that the optimal drinking water is one with a negative (-) ORP.
Positive (+) ORP can be changed to (-) Negative ORP with Hydrogen water makers/machines.
Hydrogen rich water is an anti-oxidizing agent, as it has a negative (-) ORP value and it is able to donate extra electrons to neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals on the body. Hydrogen water makers produces highly negative (-) ORP -210 to -1000 which means drinking of that water has therapeutic effect on the body. This water is called “living” water. It is an excellent source of energy and stimulates cell regeneration, improves metabolism, normalizes blood pressure.
Understanding pH (indicator of acidity or alkalinity)
One of the important parameters of water quality is the pH. A pH measurement reveals whether the solution is acidic, neutral, or alkaline. pH refers to the negative logarithmic (log) measurement of the H+ ion concentration in solution. pH is the index as a value indicating the degree of acidity or alkalinity of water. The more H+, the more acidic; the less H+, the more alkaline. The term pH was first used in 1920, but the concept was invented by Danish chemist, Soren Peter Sorenson, in 1909 to refer to negative log (inverse of an exponent) of the hydrogen ion concentration.
Commonly human’s body pH is 7.35~7.45, is alkalescence. The water that has higher acidity (less than pH7) than human body can cause ‘the oxidation’. That’s why it is important to prevent our body not to be acid, for that, we need to care about ‘the reduction process’.Most of bottled or filtered water are slightly acidic.
Hydrogen rich water makers convert that water to neutral or slightly alkaline water. They create water of pH7.0~8.0 which has therapeutic effect on human body.
When body fluid maintains pH7.4 of neutral water, the germs or other bacterias cannot access to and inhibit in our body as normal defense system starts operating to maintain our health, the blood circulation can be in stable status and resistibility and recoverability against any other infection would be strengthened and the movement of hormone and enzyme would be more quicker and faster. The brain would be sharp and smart and would have outstanding instinct and insight so you can have quick and sharp sense.
